CREATIVE STRATEGIES

AIMS

The essential aims of this module are:
  1. To generate ideas, concepts, proposals, solutions or arguments in response to a set brief
  2. To apply critical and practical skills for developing appropriate creative solutions
  3. To create awareness of design communication from a 360º perspective
  4. To demonstrate an understanding of the links between the formation of ideas and their material realisation
  5. To demonstrate the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  6. To identify and research issues appropriate to the subject area
  7. To develop an awareness to the evolving industry practices
  8. To explore alternative methods and techniques for obtaining data

A successful student will be able to:

This was the first class we had with Alec, he talked abit about himself, here is a link to his youtube channel if you wanna check out his showreel (https://www.youtube.com/user/deepestpurple/videos) he then gave us a tutorial to refresh our memories about the basics of Maya ( Modelling and rigging) as well as touching on some new things we had yet to explore in great depth e.g UV maps.

We were also given our second project of the year:

  • We have to create a 15 second 3D animation
  • Deadline is four weeks away (16/10/14)
  • For next week we have to do a 2-3min presentation of the teams idea (story concept, story boards, character concepts etc)
  • KEEP IT SIMPLE!
  • PLAN EVERYTHING

For this project our team includes Ryan, Charlie, Tyrone and Me. I think that we have a strong team more than capable of pulling of something awesome. Exciting times ahead!

DESIGN DISCOURSE 2

The first official class of second year!

This year we are looking more into the specific job types we could possibly go into after we graduate. Up to now everyone in our class have been generalists, trying abit of everything. This will probably change throughout the year. Conann has asked us to think about the different areas and to consider specializing in one particular area. The idea is to become a ‘T-shaped’ person. Someone who has a working knowledge of every aspect of production partnered with a detailed understanding of our chosen area. At this point in time I’m finding it hard to narrowing my interests down to one specific direction, although I definitely have some favorites. I particularly enjoy story development and conceptualization bit, I also like modeling characters and assets as well as the actual animation of characters. Maybe with a bit of time and some more research into these areas will help me decide. He also discussed making yourself a more desirable employee, he mentioned that we should all be talking to people (networking), to also consider taking other classes like further life drawing and so on. He also recommended a two books that we should read for some inspiration- ‘The Pixar Touch’ and ‘Moving Innovation’.

  3. Present a critical analysis of a single interactive or animated ‘piece’, or practitioner in this field who exhibits an ‘authorial’ approach in their work, via an audio/visual presentation.
  4. Plan and conduct a critical essay, resulting in written work of a high quality.
  5. Demonstrate skills in written and oral communication, the process of research, the organisation of material, and the presentation of informed critical arguments that relate to relevant issues and debates.

Conann gave us a two week project were we received an area of practice in animation. Me and Nadine were paired together and we got to look into “rig removal and retouching”. As a team we have to research and develop our knowledge of the practice and then put a 5 minute presentation together showing everything we have learned. Conann also stressed the importance of using correct citation, so we’ll have to find out more about plagiarism and referencing.

YEAR TWO

After a long summer of being a recluse I starting back to uni last week! A couple of changes, I am now a second year :), a new room (Carl senior) and a new tutor, Alec (He’s a cool guy).

So we got stuck straight in with week Zero. It was nice to meet the new first years and getting to work with some of them. Alot of fun. It was also quite a strange seeing people go through the same experience I had last year, made me feel older and wiser. Even though there’s still soooo much to learn and do. It was a great opportunity to get ready for the start of real work. Getting back in the swing of the way things work, like the ideation process, presentation, a bit of modelling etc. A much needed top-up.

Me and Daryl (Randall) got to work together with a group of first years (Callum, Kerry and Jennifer). They were all great to work with, full of enthusiasm and good ideas. By the end of the week we were working on a project which required to design a game on a watch for an autistic child. I thought we all worked well as a team and developed a nice concept by the end of it. Our watch would come with a pair of contact lenses that allow the user to interact with an A.I character to play games with and make everyday life a more enjoyable for the child, another band would be provided allowing the childs parents or teacher, to keep track with the childs emotions by subtlety changing the colour of a small screen/gem on the band.  Check it out, Heres a collection of the teams work ->

This was the final concept sketches that Doogie used as reference for modelling, Callum and Kerry worked on them. If we had abit more time on the project we could have pushed the design further through more development and ideation.

The two images above show a quick example that the team designed that I modelling quickly in maya.This was a concept for the guardian of the child. The arm was a borrowing asset from another team 🙂 Cheers James.

This was the final wrist watch concept modelled by doogs, in the limited time we had this was the furthest we got with the model, its missing a few things but it still shows what the product would look like.

 

GOODBRUSH->

Conann or Alec mentioned a website to check out that is good to look at for concept designs, paintings and sketches. (www.goodbrush.com) My first opinion of it is that it seems like a pretty useful website for reference and inspiration. I really like the interface of the page very quick and easy to use. Here is a few images I liked from my first visit.->

Love the colour in this one, real nice perspective aswell.

I thought this one was really cool. The rough brush stroke look is something that I want to try, I think it would add alot more appeal to my work and also make it easier for me to get better at creating digital paintings. Im still struggling with the change from hand painting to digital.
